Haunting Liberty Square - An acrylic painting on gessoed art paper.

Haunting Liberty Square

My family’s love for the lands and attractions in the Magic Kingdom is obvious in my work, and the Haunted Mansion in Liberty Square is one of our top favorites (like many of you I’m sure :)

This painting of the mythic attraction is a smaller study done in acrylic paints for a larger work. I used a method of transparency with the paints, using a lot more medium than normal which made the mixtures thinner and allowed the white paper and other paints underneath to show through more easily. This method let me create multiple layers of colors, taking my time to build up a richness of blues, oranges, magentas, and browns.

Painting like this has a hint of playfulness to it, which is appropriate for the subject. I visited the park several times to capture reference materials, both at night and during the day. Once, I even worked in a quick sketch-session on the iPad WHILE on the attraction.

One of the wonderful things about Disney World is the world-class team of cast members who make guests’ experience so magical. And the cast members for THIS attraction elevate that art and service even higher. They create a world of dark humor, fear, and delicious fun.
