Tangled Lanterns
One of our family’s very favorite Disney films is Tangled. We love the story, characters, the music, and the magic of the animation. AND we love the special spot in the Magic Kingdom where the Disney Imagineers brought the land of Tangled to life, right near Rapunzel’s Tower and the Tangled rest area.
In this painting, I really wanted to capture the mysterious and nostalgic feeling of dusk (my favorite time of day) and the magic of the “lights” that Rapunzel dreams of in the movie. I spent a lot of time at the little tables littered through-out the area, creating a lot of sketches for this painting. (Several of my visits where during cold weather and a cup of Joffrey’s was ever-present next to my sketching tools :)
For this piece, I worked on a large piece of illustration board in my studio and spent a lot of time building up the acrylic paints. This was a slight departure from my normal method of using acrylics, where I place them much more quickly and more transparently. For Tangled Lanterns, I mixed the paints very thickly, using almost no extra medium. The process took a little longer but I am very pleased with the vibrancy of the colors as a result.
